Ocuflox Eye Drops Contain a Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone (flor-o-KWIN-o-lone) antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Ocuflox (for use in the eyes) is used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes. Ocuflox is also used to treat an ulcer in the cornea of the eye. Ocuflox will not treat a viral or fungal infection of the eye. Ocuflox may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Ocuflox (Ofloxacin), by Allergan, is indicated for the treatment of conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers caused by susceptible strains of organisms. Susceptible gram-positive organisms for both conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers include: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Susceptible gram-negative organisms for conjunctivitis include: Enterobacter cloacae, Haemophilusinfluenzae, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. For corneal ulcers, susceptible gram-negative organisms include P. aeruginosa and Serratiamarcescens as well as the anaerobe Propionibacterium acnes

Working

Ocuflox eye drops belong to the group of medications called fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics that are used to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Ocufloxeye drops are used to treat eye infections such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye). The eye drops work by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.

This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

 

Dosage

The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis is:

  • Days 1 and 2 Instill one to two drops every two to four hours in the affected eye(s).
  • Days 3 through 7 Instill one to two drops four times daily.

The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial corneal ulcer is:

  • Days 1 and 2 Instill one to two drops into the affected eye every 30 minutes, while awake. Awaken at approximately four and six hours after retiring and instill one to two drops.
  • Days 3 through 7 to 9Instill one to two drops hourly, while awake.
  • Days 7 to 9 through treatment completion Instill one to two drops, four times daily.
 

Precautions

You should not use Ocuflox if you are allergic to ofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, and others).

Do not use this medicine to treat a viral or fungal infection in the eye. Ocuflox Drops is for use in treating only bacterial infections of the eye.

It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

It is not known whether Ocufloxophthalmic passes into breast milk or if it could affect the nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.

Ocuflox eye drops (solution) are not approved for use by anyone younger than 1 year old.
