Generic Valtrex Uses, Interactions, Warnings

Generic Valtrex (valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus to help the body fight the infection. Generic Valtrex is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles (herpes zoster) in adults. Generic Valtrex is used to treat cold sores in children who are at least 12 years old, or chickenpox in children who are at least 2 years old. Generic Valtrex will not cure herpes and will not prevent you from spreading the virus to other people. However, this medicine can lessen the symptoms of an infection. Generic Valtrex may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Generic Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is also a prescription antiviral medication also indicated in the treatment of HSV and VZV. More simply put, it is considered the prodrug of acyclovir. First-pass metabolism removes most of the acyclovir from circulation, and this is why the oral bioavailability is so low for acyclovir. In contrast, first-pass metabolism converts Generic Valtrex to acyclovir which is then available to the body. The oral bioavailability when taking acyclovir is only 10-20%, while the oral bioavailability of Generic Valtrex is as high as 54%. The process of first-pass metabolism also creates differences in how often these drugs must be dosed. Acyclovir must be dosed three to five times daily depending on the indication, and Generic Valtrex is typically once or twice daily depending on the indication. Generic Valtrex is only available in oral tablets in 500 mg and 1,000 mg strengths.

Working

Herpes viruses are basically just DNA wrapped in a protein coating. In order for the virus to be able to multiply, it needs to first replicate its DNA. Generic Valtrex acts through multiple mechanisms to prevent the replication of herpes DNA. It is active against HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, and to a lesser extent other herpes viruses, like CMV. When viral DNA is prevented from replicating, the virus cannot multiply and infect uninfected cells. This is how Generic Valtrex works:

Aborts (stops) or shortens outbreaks of genital herpes, oral herpes, and shingles

Prevents outbreaks of genital and oral herpes

Decreases the risk of viral transmission to the uninfected partner

Dosage

Generic Valtrex comes in two doses, 500 mg and 1,000 mg tablets. Although there are only two doses, there are several different ways to use the medicine for different indications. FAQs

Is Generic Valtrex and acyclovir the same thing?

Valacyclovir is known by its brand name, Generic Valtrex. It is rapidly processed and converted into acyclovir, its active component. Generic Valtrex is FDA approved to treat genital herpes, cold sores (herpes labialis), and herpes zoster

Is Valtrex more effective than generic?

For instance, if you pick up your prescription for Valtrex, the generic form of Valacyclovir Hydrochloride may appear blue in color, versus the brand name which is typically white. These subtle changes have no impact on the effectiveness of a generic drug to perform the same task as its brand name counterpart.

Is there an over the counter version of Generic Valtrex?

Generic Valtrex is also used to treat infections with herpes zoster (shingles) and herpes simplex genitalis (genital herpes). Abreva is available as a generic and over-the-counter (OTC). Generic Valtrex is an oral drug and Abreva is a topical (for the skin) medication.

Does Valtrex or acyclovir work better?

Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex) and acyclovir (Zovirax) are antiviral drugs that work by interfering with viral DNA replication. Both drugs target the same viruses but Generic Valtrex provides longer duration of action, therefore, doses can be taken fewer times every day - this is the only real advantage.

How quickly does Generic Valtrex work?

It can take up to seven to 10 days for Valtrex to start working for some people, while others may feel relief from their symptoms after a day or two. The amount of time it takes your symptoms to go away will depend on your age, the severity of your symptoms, and your metabolism.

Is it too late to take Generic Valtrex?

Generic Valtrex (Valacyclovir) works best if it is used within 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes (e.g., pain, burning, or blisters) begin to appear. For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, valacyclovir works best if it is used within 24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear.

Is Generic Valtrex bad for kidneys?

Generic Valtrex can be harmful to the kidneys, and these effects are increased when it is used together with other medicines that can harm the kidneys. Tell your doctor about all other medications you are using. You may need dose adjustments or special tests when taking certain medications together with Generic Valtrex.

What happens when you stop taking Generic Valtrex?

If you stop taking the drug suddenly or don't take it at all: The symptoms of your viral infection may not get better, or may get worse. If you miss doses or don't take the drug on schedule: Your medication may not work as well or may stop working completely
