Generic Prometrium is used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women who have passed menopause and have not had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). In conjunction with estrogen, HRT is used to treat menopausal symptoms and reduce the risk of certain diseases. Estrogen can cause abnormal thickening of the uterus lining, which can increase the risk of developing uterine cancer; Generic Prometrium works to prevent such thickening, and reduce the subsequent risk of cancer by decreasing the amount of estrogen in the uterus. It also helps to induce menstruation by replacing the natural progesterone in women of childbearing ae, who no longer have normal periods.

Dosage

Prevention of Endometrial Hyperplasia: 200 mg by mouth once daily at bedtime for 12 consecutive days per 28 day cycle. Treatment of Secondary Amenorrhea: 400 mg by mouth once daily at bedtime for 10 days.

Precautions

Generic Prometrium or Progesterone generic should be used with caution with Ketoconazole, Clarithromycin, and Erythromycin because they slow the breakdown of Progesterone and increase its levels in the body.

There is a very slight chance that this medicine could increase the risk of breast cancer and endometrial cancer in some women. Using large doses of this medicine over a long period of time and using it with an estrogen medicine may increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, or dementia. Talk with your doctor about these risks.
