Ciloxan Eye Drops: Treatment for corneal ulcer and conjunctivitis

Ciloxan is a fluoroquinolone (flor-o-KWIN-o-lone) antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Ciloxan (for use in the eyes) is used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes. Ciloxan is also used to treat an ulcer in the cornea of the eye. Ciloxan will not treat a viral or fungal infection of the eye. Ciloxan is for use in treating only bacterial infections. Ciloxan may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Ciloxan Eye Drops are used to treat certain types of eye infections caused by bacteria. Your doctor will usually prescribe this medicine to treat a type of eye infection called bacterial conjunctivitis or an infected ulcer of the cornea. Ciloxan Eye Drops contain the active ingredient ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is a "fluoroquinolone" antibiotic. This antibiotic works by killing the bacteria that are causing your infection. Ciloxan Eye Drops are only available on a doctor's prescription. Your doctor may have prescribed Ciloxan for another reason.

Working

Ciploxan Eye Drops works by killing the bacteria that cause infection. This medication treats only bacterial eye infections. It will not work for other types of eye infections.

To instill the Ciploxan Eye Drops, follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Check the dropper tip to make sure that it is not chipped or cracked.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip against your eye or anything else; eye drops and droppers must be kept clean.
  • While tilting your head back, pull down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger to form a pocket.
  • Hold the dropper with the other hand, as close to the eye as possible without touching it.
  • Brace the remaining fingers of that hand against your face.
  • Close your eye for 2 to 3 minutes and tip your head down as though looking at the floor. Try not to blink or squeeze your eyelids.
  • Place a finger on the tear duct and apply gentle pressure.
  • Replace and tighten the cap on the dropper bottle. Do not wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
  • Wash your hands to remove any medication.
 

Dosage

The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of corneal ulcers is two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours and then two drops into the affected eye every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, instill two drops in the affected eye hourly. On the third through the fourteenth day, place two drops in the affected eye every four hours. Treatment may be continued after 14 days if corneal reepithelialization has not occurred.

 

Precautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: contact lens use, other eye problems. Your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if the medication in this product passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

 

Side Effects

  • severe burning, stinging, or irritation after using this medicine; or
  • eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (may be signs of infection).
  • dry eyes or watery eyes;
  • eye pain or discomfort;
  • red or puffy eyelids;
  • feeling like something is in your eye;
  • blurred vision; or
  • mild itching, redness, or other irritation.

How do you use ciloxan?

Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down your lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place a 1/2 inch (1.5 centimeters) strip of ointment into the pouch by squeezing the tube gently. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Roll your eyeball in all directions to spread the medication.

How long should I use ciloxan?

The usual dose in adults and children (one month and over) is five drops of Ciloxan in the affected ear(s), twice each day for nine days. Your doctor will tell you how many drops you need to use each day. These dosing instructions will be printed on the label your pharmacist puts on the bottle or carton.

Can ciloxan be used as ear drops?

Ciprofloxacin drops are often used for the eye, but it is safe to be used in the ears as well. If you are concerned, talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
